SuPreAM project is entering its final phase

𝙎𝙪𝙋𝙧𝙚𝘼𝙈 𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙟𝙚𝙘𝙩 𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙞𝙩𝙨 𝙛𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙥𝙝𝙖𝙨𝙚

Yesterday, we had the privilege of participating in the 5th General Assembly of the hashtagSuPreAM project, hosted by the Luleå tekniska universitet in Sweden.
This meeting marked the beginning of the final stage of a highly relevant European research initiative, bringing together all consortium partners to review the progress achieved so far and align the remaining activities leading up to the project’s completion in next December.

SuPreAM (PREdictive simulation of finishing operations in steel Additive Manufacturing for optimal SUrface integrity) project aims to develop advanced predictive simulation models capable of optimising finishing operations for additively manufactured steel components, improving surface integrity, reducing material waste, and enhancing industrial competitiveness.

Within the project, 𝗗𝗥𝗧 𝗠𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗣𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀. Our team contributes its expertise in metal additive manufacturing (DMLS), precision machining, EDM, and steel component finishing, with a strong focus on tooling and mould-making applications. Through this work, we are helping to establish a deeper understanding of the relationship between additive manufacturing processes, machining parameters, surface integrity, and the functional performance of high-value industrial components.

Over the past months, the consortium has made significant progress in the numerical modelling of machining and EDM processes, surface integrity characterisation, demonstrator development, and predictive model validation.
SuPreAM highlights the importance of collaboration between industry, universities, and research centres in addressing the challenges of advanced manufacturing, fostering innovation through digitalisation, simulation technologies, and data-driven process optimisation.

The project is coordinated by Eurecat – Centro Tecnológico and brings together a multidisciplinary consortium comprising ArcelorMittal, Grupo Sevilla Control (GSC), Luleå tekniska universitet, CIMNE, IDONIAL Centro Tecnológico and the 𝘿𝙍𝙏 𝙂𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙥.

A sincere thank you to the Luleå tekniska universitet team for hosting this successful General Assembly and to all project partners for their continued commitment and collaboration.

As we enter the final stretch of the project, our focus remains on consolidating results, validating predictive models, and delivering innovative solutions that will support the future of additive manufacturing and advanced steel processing industries.

Digitalisation of the injection moulding process Hi-Rev Project

𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆.
Within the framework of the Hi-Rev Agenda, DRT Group developed an integrated system for the intelligent optimisation of the injection moulding process, combining mould engineering, cyber-physical systems, industrial monitoring and Artificial Intelligence.

The project aimed to create a digital ecosystem capable of continuously analysing, interpreting and optimising production conditions, promoting greater process stability, improved part quality and increased manufacturing efficiency.
Key developments included:
✔ Development of an intelligent cooling circuit management and control system for injection moulds;
✔ Integration of temperature, pressure and flow sensors for real-time process monitoring;
✔ Acquisition and processing of production data from injection moulding machines, including critical process parameters;
✔ Implementation of automated inspection and image acquisition systems for part quality assessment;
✔ Application of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Bayesian Optimisation algorithms to support decision-making and dynamic process optimisation;
✔ Design studies and simulation of conformal cooling channels manufactured through metal additive manufacturing to enhance mould thermal efficiency.

The results achieved demonstrate the potential of industrial data analytics and intelligent algorithms to reduce manufacturing defects, improve mould thermal stability, increase resource efficiency and contribute to shorter process operating times.

This work benefited from the scientific collaboration of INEGI and FEUP, whose expertise was instrumental in the development of Artificial Intelligence algorithms and the validation of the technological approaches implemented.

DRT Group’s participation in the Hi-rEV Agenda reinforces its commitment to industrial digitalisation, technological innovation and the development of advanced manufacturing solutions for the automotive industry of the future.
